Emerging from the depths of the German underground, MOUTH OF MADNESS have always moved at their own pace—driven more by vision than by velocity. Since the release of their haunting self-titled EP in 2016, the band has operated in silence, steadily shaping something far greater in scope. Now, after nearly a decade in the making, their debut album “Event Horizon” is finally set to see the light of day via Darkness Shall Rise, in a range of formats. Anyone who has had a chance to listen to the exceptionally good EP, will probably agree that “Event Horizon” basically picks up where the duo left off after the EP. The album comprises nine songs of which three are great ambient pieces respectively titled “Transhimalaya I, II, III” and created by no less than one of the founders of ambient pioneers POPOL VUH. The remaining six tracks showcase an inspired band`s curious take on Metal that due to its originality defies being easily tagged. It`s likely no stretch to claim the bulk of MOUTH OF MADNESS` compositions relying on Death Metal. At least some of the riffing is undeniably reminiscent of MORBID ANGEL, but also of early Swedish Metal like UNPURE. Aggressive Black Metal but also doomy and epic parts…there’s something on “Event Horizon” for everyone who likes dark, rough and menacing music. The most ambitious song of the album, the labyrinthine “Fireborn” best embodies this blend. MOUTH OF MADNESS should appeal to fans of early TRIBULATION, VENENUM, CHAPEL OF DISEASE and anyone into Death Metal in general that appreciates originality.
