Dornenreich's return to black metal

On their seventh album "Flammentriebe", Dornenreich look back to their roots and - after their more experimental works "Hexenwind" (2005), "Durch den Traum" (2006), and "In Luft geritzt" (2008) - release their first extreme-metal record in ten years. "Flammentriebe" is surrounded by an aura that is as tormented as it is blazing, making this record a lambent tribute to the principles of raw and archaic black metal.

In February 2001, Dornenreich set up a ground-breaking monument to themselves and the world of poetic Black Metal with their third album, "Her von welken Nächten." Almost to the day ten years later, they are returning with "Flammentriebe" – an album that as their first Black Metal release since 2001 picks up the thread music-wise as well as in terms of the line-up: for the first time since "Her von welken Nächten," Eviga is joined again by drummer Gilvan and violinist Inve on a Dornenreich metal album.

This past decade has left deep marks on the Austrian sound poets: the youthful Sturm und Drang of "Her von welken Nächten" is definitely a thing of the past. Their magical seventh album "Flammentriebe" is surrounded by an aura that is as tormented as it is blazing, making this recording a lambent tribute to the principles of raw and archaic Black Metal – a release that more than fulfils the listeners' appetite for an album just like this.

Although the song lyrics may be considerably more embittered than before, they are nonetheless still defined by the idea of the circle as the centre of all doing. As always, they are an elemental part of the whole and emphasize Dornenreich's high artistic demands. The bitterness can be sensed in the music as well: thundering drum parts and hypnotic violin melodies unite with Eviga's painful screams and feverish guitar play to a Black Metal wildfire that, like in homage to their own work, cites all of the band's creative periods to date in a subtle and considered manner. This album is as hypnotic and painful as fire.

Dornenreich's masterpiece

With their third album "Her von welken Nächten", Dornenreich succeed in increasing the passion of their first two albums in a substantial way: "Her von welken Nächten", that is one hour of authentic dark and dynamic intensity in nine waves. Thanks to their will to individuality that expresses itself in unique arrangements, multi-layered structures, many surprises, and extremely varied vocals, Dornenreich do justice to their main ambition - raising the intensity without stagnating in the realisation of that aim.
There is much to learn from Dornenreich. They show their audience that music is not only listening, but also feeling, experiencing. "Nicht um zu sterben" was their debut, "Bitter ist´s dem Tod zu dienen" took them even further away from their original Black Metal roots into intense romantic music without boundaries and full of marvels. Dornenreich´s new record "Her von welken Nächten" is the climax of their evolution so far and will proof that music and lyrics are indeed a homogeneous unity.
Both are blend into one entity that will make it possible to not only understand, but to live through the events taking place in just one night in a human life. The long-awaited successor to their "Her von welken Nächten"

Dornenreich's fans had to wait nearly five years after "Her von welken Nächten" until "Hexenwind" was released. The album was well worth the wait! Of course, Dornenreich remain firmly rooted in their very own world of enchanted and dream-like sounds. Their new approach is a different one, though. While "Her von welken Nächten" was tempestuous, harrowing, and eternally young, "Hexenwind" is mature, wise, and equable. Starting from a base that has consciously been kept simple, the new tracks invite their listeners to join in a melancholic and sometimes even hypnotic journey.

Their eccentric acoustic album

"In Luft geritzt" is Dornenreich's sixth studio recording and shows Jochen 'Eviga' Stock and Thomas 'Inve' Riesner, who are the creative heads of Dornenreich since 2006, from a totally new perspective: the pieces are acoustically arranged, yet they strongly defy the stereotypes of an 'unplugged' album. The title - 'Carved in Air' - is open to interpretation and hints at the Austrians' aim to merge music, words and image into something that is searching and demanding at the same time, something that sounds as powerful as it sounds unforced.

A climactic and quintessential release in Dornenreich's discography

In their 18th year of existence, Dornenreich release their eighth studio record "Freiheit". What appears to be a logical progression from the acoustic album "In Luft geritzt" (2008) turns out to be the Austrians' most versatile and courageous work to date. Confidently citing genres such as (Neo) Folk, Black Metal, Ambient, Neoclassical, Singer-Songwriter and even Flamenco/World Music, Dornenreich, consciously dodge categorisation and create an album that, in the end, could not have come from any other band than themselves.
With respect to its content, "Freiheit" is unmistakeably Dornenreich as well. It is "a concept album about the development of a human being from its undetached mode of existence towards an adult manchild's conscious internal - and thus also external - freedom", says Eviga about the lyrical aspect, which has always played a crucial role for Dornenreich, and continues: "As insinuated by the title and conceptual idea of the album, the music resembles a large river meandering through countless musical styles with unmatched vibrance and intensity. Dornenreich's manifestation is indebted to life, stems from and gets drawn towards the whole."

Thus "Freiheit" is both a climactic and quintessential release, yet also marks a period of change and transition, for as already pointed out by Eviga, it will remain the group's last studio album for a longer time.

Ever since their masterpiece "Her von welken Nächten" (2001), Dornenreich are spear heads of intelligent music somewhere between black metal, gothic, and folk. With their live document "Nachtreisen", the Austrians invite you on a multi-facetted journey through their own history and present two concerts: a metal gig and an acoustic performance. The DVD also contains photo galleries with many unreleased pictures from the band's archives.
"Nachtreisen" impressingly balances Dornenreich's career so far and is a must-have for every fan of the band!

DORNENREICH offer a veritable cornucopia of wonderful surprises on their ninth full-length "Du wilde Liebe sei". The Tyrolean trio has used the more than seven years that have passed since the release of their latest masterpiece "Freiheit" (2014) well to create a new dimension of sound. Although "Du wilde Liebe sei" remains faithful within the Austrians' musical canon of combining heightened emotional dynamics with expressive momentum, DORNENREICH evolved their trademark sound further into a new dimension: a pulsating earth-rooted web build from percussion, bass, and electric guitars enables their unique vocals, acoustic guitars, and violins to grow wings and freely soar skywards. As the translation of the album title "You Wild Love Be" implies, this record revolves around the mystery of "love" and many of the powerful effects, painful misunderstandings, and complex entanglements that are forever associated with this human idea.
